Pakistan had a disastrous start to their chase, as they lost their openers Abid Shafique and Fakhar Zaman in the first three overs, both falling to David Willey. Shafique was caught behind for a duck, while Zaman was caught at mid-off for 1. Willey bowled with pace and swing, and troubled the Pakistan batsmen with his accuracy.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan then tried to steady the innings, as they added 66 runs for the third wicket in 14 overs. Azam was the more fluent of the two, scoring 38 from 45 balls, with six fours. Rizwan was more cautious, scoring 36 from 51 balls, with two fours. However, both of them fell in quick succession, as they were caught by Liton Das off Adil Rashid. Rashid bowled with guile and variation, and deceived the Pakistan batsmen with his googlies and sliders.

Pakistan were in deep trouble at 73 for 4 in the 17th over, and needed a miracle to win the match. Saud Shakeel and Asif Salman tried to rebuild the innings, England end World Cup with win as they added 58 runs for the fifth wicket in 11 overs. Shakeel scored 29 from 37 balls, with four fours, while Salman scored 51 from 45 balls, with six fours and a six. Pakistan were reduced to 131 for 6 in the 28th over, and the match seemed all but over. Imad Ahmed and Shadab Khan then tried to delay the inevitable, as they added 25 runs for the seventh wicket in 7 overs. Ahmed scored 3 from 5 balls, while Khan scored 4 from 7 balls. However, both of them fell in the same over, as they were caught by Bairstow off Moeen Ali. Ali bowled with flight and spin, and lured the Pakistan batsmen into false shots.

Pakistan were 156 for 8 in the 35th over, and needed 182 more runs to win with two wickets in hand. Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Wasim then tried to provide some entertainment, as they added 39 runs for the ninth wicket in 6 overs. Afridi scored 25 from 23 balls, with three fours and a six, England end World Cup with win while Wasim scored 16 from 14 balls, with two fours and a six. However, both of them fell in the same over, as they were caught by Stokes off Willey. Willey completed his five-wicket haul, and finished with figures of 5 for 56 from 10 overs.

Hasan Rauf, the No. 11 batsman, refused to give up, launched stunning assault  England bowlers. He scored 35 from 23 balls, with three fours three sixes, took Pakistan past 200 and then 240. He was well supported by  last man, Rashid Khan, who scored 0 from 1 ball, but gave Rauf strike as much possible.

However, Rauf’s heroics were not enough, as he was caught by Buttler off Woakes in the 44th over. Woakes bowled a short ball, and Rauf went for a pull, but only managed to edge it to the keeper. Pakistan were all out for 244 in 43.3 overs, and lost the match by 93 runs. England celebrated their victory, while Pakistan were left to rue their poor batting performance.

England have secured their spot in the semi-finals, as they have won four out of four matches in the tournament. They will face India their last group match, which will decide top spot group. Pakistan have been knocked out of ‘ tournament, they have lost three out of four matches. They will face Sri Lanka their last group match, which will be dead rubber.
